Focus on school's discretion as admissions begin
Top city schools say they are doing everything 'as per law' so you are confused about the slew of different criteria being cited by schools for nursery admissions and are wondering if things are being done as per the High Court's direction? Every general-category school has to follow the 100-point criteria while assessing a candidate. Of the 100 points, the HC had accorded 20 points to schools for setting their individual parameters. Schools, however, have to keep parents informed about these parameters.

Even special schools set up for children of armed forces or paramilitary forces personnel have to follow the 100-point criteria for general-category candidates. For children of servicemen, they have to follow their own policy norms. The Ganguly Committee says schools have to be absolutely transparent on the parameters adopted by it and should also cite the points awarded to a candidate, specifying the category under which this has been done.

It goes on to suggest that schools can allocate 5 points to single parents, on the basis of parents' profession, to children belonging to disadvantaged groups and of government employees in transferable jobs, defence and paramilitary forces. "The whole idea was to allow schools to support certain communities as per their need and give them space to meet their own requirements," said DPS (RK Puram) principal Shayama Chona, who is a member of the Ganguly Committee.

Chona says her school tries to support single and working parents. The school mainly caters to children of professionals and
government servants. It has decided to award 10 points to wards of single parents and working parents (if both partners work) and 10 points to children of government and defence personnel.

Schools like Sanskriti, for instance, are also awarding points to government servants and professionals under the school-specific parameters. "We will start admissions from December 12 as the date was decided earlier. We will follow the High Court norms because we are not expecting much change. Our admission forms are also ready and the school-specific parameters will be publicised," said Gouri Ishwaran, principal Sanskriti School.

Modern School (Barakhamba Road) will also start registration for its nursery school from December 9. Although the school has not yet declared the dates of admission, principal Lata Vaidyanathan says "everything will be as per law". "Even the Ganguly Committee has given 20 points to schools for setting their own parameters. As long as we are transparent about what the criteria are, there is no problem," said Vaidyanathan.

Schools are clearly waiting for the December 8 court hearing before they start the admission process, but they assert that the process will be transparent. "We have not decided the parameters, but they will be displayed before admissions," said Bharati Sharma, principal Amity (Saket).
